Finding Your “Why”
Last week, we talked about the importance of discipline in building new habits. While discipline keeps you moving forward, knowing your "why" provides the fuel for your journey. It’s the deeply personal reason behind your goals, and it can be the difference between giving up and pushing through when times get tough.
Why Your "Why" Matters
Your "why" is your purpose—the reason you start and stick with something. It adds meaning to your efforts, turning routine tasks into acts of intention. Without a clear "why," it’s easy to lose sight of your goals when challenges arise or motivation wanes.
For example, if you’re trying to lose weight, your "why" could be:
To be healthier and reduce the risk of illness.
To have more energy to play with your kids.
To feel more confident and comfortable in your body.
To live longer and enjoy life to the fullest.
Each "why" is unique and deeply personal. Identifying yours can provide clarity and keep you grounded.
How to Find Your “Why”
Finding your "why" isn’t always immediate. It requires introspection and honesty with yourself. Here are some questions to help you uncover it:
What is my ultimate goal?
Be specific about what you want to achieve. For example, instead of saying, "I want to get fit," say, "I want to run a 5K in three months."
Why is this goal important to me?
Dig deep into the emotional reasons behind your goal. For instance, "I want to run a 5K because it will show me that I’m capable of achieving things I once thought were impossible."
How will achieving this goal improve my life?
Think about the ripple effects of reaching your goal. Will it bring you joy, confidence, or a sense of accomplishment?
What would happen if I didn’t pursue this goal?
Sometimes understanding the cost of inaction can clarify your "why."
Does this goal align with my values?
Ensure your "why" is in harmony with what truly matters to you. Goals that align with your core values are more likely to be sustainable.
The Power of Asking "Why" in Life
Asking "why" isn’t just about goals; it’s a powerful tool for self-awareness and decision-making. By questioning your motives and intentions, you can:
Clarify your objectives. Ensure your actions align with your long-term vision.
Identify unnecessary obligations. Say no to things that don’t serve your purpose.
Stay aligned with your values. Make decisions that reflect who you are and what you stand for.
For example, if you’re considering taking on a new project at work, asking "Why am I doing this?" can help you determine whether it aligns with your career goals or if it’s simply adding unnecessary stress.
Turning Your “Why” Into Action
Once you’ve identified your "why," it’s time to put it into action. Here’s how:
Write It Down
Keep your "why" visible. Write it on a sticky note, create a vision board, or set a reminder on your phone. Seeing it regularly reinforces its importance.
Use It as a Compass
Let your "why" guide your decisions. When faced with a choice, ask yourself, "Does this align with my purpose?"
Revisit and Refine
Your "why" may evolve over time. Periodically reflect on it to ensure it still resonates with you.
Share It With Others
Sharing your "why" with friends, family, or a mentor can provide accountability and encouragement.
Connect It to Your Daily Habits
Tie your "why" to small, actionable steps. For example, if your "why" is to improve your health, commit to daily habits like drinking more water, exercising, or preparing healthy meals.
Your Why, Your Journey
Finding your "why" is a deeply personal journey. It’s not about what others think you should do or what society expects of you. It’s about uncovering the motivations that matter most to you.
As you navigate this new year, I encourage you to take the time to reflect on your goals and intentions. Ask yourself "why" often and honestly. Use your "why" as a compass to guide your actions, keep you disciplined, and remind you of the bigger picture.
Remember, your "why" is the anchor that keeps you grounded and the spark that keeps you moving forward. Embrace it, honour it, and watch as it transforms your life.
